The Column Betting System
The Column Betting strategy is a betting system that is unique to the game of roulette, simply because, as the name suggests, it involves betting on the columns on the roulette table.
To start, you need to be familiar with the layout of a roulette table. The table is laid out in a grid, with 3 numbers in each row, and 12 numbers in each column. So, 1, 2 and 3 makes up the first row and 34, 35 and 36 make up the 12 row. That means the column that starts with 1 ends with 34, 2 ends with 35 and 3 ends with 36, with another 10 numbers in between. For this betting system, it is the columns that we are interested in, so going forward we’ll simply call them 1, 2 and 3, just to keep it easy.
The Column Betting strategy is a non-sequential betting system, which means it is best suited to using Flat Betting, as well. So your bet size will never increase, and it will also never decrease, giving you a stability in your betting which means you session can be prolonged, unlike systems where your bet size constantly fluctuates and has you betting ridiculous amounts for a relatively small gain.
So the next thing to do is establish how much your bankroll is going to be – how much you are wanting to risk in the entire session. This isn’t your life sayings, it isn’t all the money in your pocket, it is how much you have side aside for the pastime of gambling. In our example, we’ll say we have $500 set aside, but you may have less or you may have more, it doesn’t really matter. The rule of thumb, especially with the Flat Betting system is that you risk/wager 1% of your bankroll on each spin of the roulette wheel. So our bets will be $5 in this example. Again, your bet size may or may not be different.
The next thing to do when using the Column Betting strategy is to pick your columns in advance, and create a sequence out of them. So it might be that you just go 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, or maybe you have a random sequence of numbers like 3, 2, 3, 3, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1 which you will then repeat for the session. It doesn’t matter, really. The reason it’s best to pick your columns beforehand is so you don’t get drawn into the “Gambler’s Fallacy” idea, that because something’s happened on previous spins, it’s bound to happen on the next one. So even if it has been Column 2 for the last 10 spins, if your sequence says Column 2 is your next bet, you stick with it, because there is still as much chance of Column 2 coming up as there is of Column 1 or Column 3 – that is a fact, even though some people will tell you otherwise.
You have got your bet size established, you have your sequence sorted, and now all that is left for you to do is bet. So, place your chip/chips at the bottom of the column (it is usually below the 34, 35 or 36, and is marked 2 to 1 or some similar variant), and wait for the roulette wheel to spin.
So we’ll have our bet on Column 1 because our sequence is going to be 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3 and so on. The numbers we have on our side are: 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31 and 34. Fortunately, the ball lands in 7, and our bet is a winner. We’ll take our chips off the table, and put another $5 bet down, this time on Column 2, and we have 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32 and 35 on our side this time. This time, it lands on 12 and our bet has lost. We continue with our sequence, and we place a $5 on Column 3. So, regardless of the outcome, we work along our sequence, and the amount we bet never change.
You would continue this until you’ve won a pre-determined amount – it may be that you decide to stop when you’ve won 10% of your bankroll, or when you’ve doubled it – or until you lose your bankroll, or lost a predetermined amount – again, it could be that once you lose 10% you decide to stop.
When betting on columns, the payout is always 2:1, and the chance of it coming up is approximately 2.17:1 on an American roulette wheel with a zero and a double zero), giving the house an edge of just over 5% , and it is on a European wheel (with only one zero), it is approximately 2.08:1, giving the house an edge of around 2.7%. Nearly every online casino offers European roulette as well as American roulette, so to maximise your chances when using the Column Betting system, it’s advisable to play on a European table, because the odds are slightly more favourable, and every little helps when it comes to maintaining a healthy bankroll.
Like any betting system that is based uses the Flat Betting system principles, it is important that you never deviate from your plan. You should always stick to the same bet size and you should always stick to your pre-determined sequence, regardless of what you think is due to happen, or if you have a feeling – that is when things get out of control. Using a system is supposed to help prolong a session and also make it more enjoyable – once you start deviating from the plan, the session may not last as long, and the fun will start going out of it. Like all betting systems, it will not make you a millionaire, but it will provide you with a fun system that might make you a profit and it might also make you a loss – there’s no such thing as a guaranteed winning system, and anyone that tells you otherwise is a liar. There are, however, betting systems that can help you get the most out of your roulette session, and help you avoid making any rash decisions where you might end up risking far more than you are prepared to lose on one bet.
